Unlike in Germany, bunkers are a very present topic in Switzerland. Every apartment and every house is assigned a bomb shelter. In their artistic approach to this topic, the artists assume “that art, like no other humanitarian field of knowledge, takes up, reflects, processes and transforms the explosive questions, themes and problems of our time in a variety of ways using the means of expression and technologies currently available.”

How can the primal human need for protected space, which is echoed by bunkers as the modern version of the ancient cave, actually redeem security on a national level or even be part of a national self-image? In what dimensions and in what ways does the past bleed into the present? What traces does such utilitarian architecture leave behind in our cities, landscapes, nature reserves and minds? Whose voices reach our ears in such a place? And can we also hear mythical cries in this echo? Till Langschied, artist and curator
